(The 20 questions test is for applicants who are 65 years of age or older and have held a green card (Lawful Permanent Resident) in the United States for 20 years or more.)
The U.S. citizenship test, also known as the naturalization test, is given by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) during your naturalization interview.
The test has two parts:
- English Test: Evaluates your ability to read, write, and speak basic English.
: - Speaking: Evaluated by the USCIS officer during the interview as you answer questions about your application and eligibility.
- Reading: You must read one out of three sentences correctly.
- Writing: You must write one out of three sentences correctly that the officer dictates to you.
- Civics Test: Assesses your knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government.
- It is an oral test.
- The officer will ask you up to 20 questions from an official list of 128 civics questions (for applications filed on or after October 20, 2025).
- You must answer 6 out of 10 questions correctly to pass (or 12 out of 20 questions for the 2025 test version).
Exceptions : The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) offers special exemptions or accommodations for the naturalization test based on an applicant’s age and length of time as a Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR, or Green Card holder).

Retesting: If you fail any portion of the test, you will be given one more opportunity to retake the failed portion within 90 days.” (or “If you fail any component, you will be scheduled for a re-examination of that component within 90 days.”)
